Thinking outside the BOX? what BOX?
For as long as I have been an Artist , I have had many people admired my creative energy and Art.
The next words out of their mouths ...I could never do that. But I know that with a level of Yes You Can! you can create art. maybe not like mine, but what your heart and soul with a little outside guidance will create your art.
I love sharing with people what I have learned , My Father started me in classic art when I was 4 years. Over the last 56 years I have spent my life trying different mediums. When I discovered Fabric that was the day I knew I could do anything. Not to make clothes although I did for my children, or traditional quilts (two or three in my lifetime). But in the last 18 years concentrating on Art Quilts ...quilts that are a cross between Traditional quilting and Folk Art.
I have created many styles over the years , nature based, animals, flowers , houses and more. Some were challenges from Artist groups I belonged to designed to make you think .
Two years ago I took out my treasured collection of Batik fabrics and dove in cutting ...eek.
Next thing I knew I had beautiful, bright, colorful landscapes. This was the eye opening moment that yes I could work with my batiks and love them. Most people who have collected Batiks are or were like me ...the collect them , they look at them , maybe even touch them , but because of the uniqueness of these fabrics and the fact that each is a individual many will not cut them and se them for their art work.
Batiks offer something that "regular" fabrics do. The designs are bright and ethereal , showcasing movement. These qualities offer the artist a opportunity to design landscapes with running water, clouds in the skies , trees on mountain tops .
